PR and Social Marketing – and inseparable partnership

These two fields ensure that messaging is effective in shaping perceptions and in driving actionable change

The alignment between social media and public relations is getting stronger. Over time, this partnership has evolved significantly, becoming increasingly intertwined as both disciplines recognize the importance of engaging audiences through meaningful interactions and influencing behaviors positively.

As a result, PR companies globally are depending more on social media to highlight their campaign messages and, most importantly, reach a wider audience. This is largely driven by the ballooning global smartphone penetration, which was estimated at 69 percent in 2023. In terms of social media usage, the United Arab Emirates was home to 10.00 million social media users in January 2023, which is equivalent to 105 percent of the total population.

Whenever these two disciplines combine their strengths – PR’s expertise in managing reputations and fostering relationships with stakeholders, and Social Marketing’s (SM) ability to inspire behavior change and social progress – brands and organizations can ultimately achieve greater success in achieving their goals.

The collaboration between these two fields ensures that messaging is not only effective in shaping perceptions but more importantly in driving actionable change, benefiting both the organization and society at large.

Additionally, today’s social marketing strategies are designed to create consumer behavioural change for the benefit of individuals and communities at large; and the powerful vehicle to communicate these messages is of course social media.

The interconnection

While PR focuses on building and maintaining positive relationships between organizations and their public through strategic communication, SM, on the other hand, uses marketing principles to promote social change. When combined, campaigns can shape perceptions and manage reputations, which often involve crisis management, corporate identity, and issues management and also influence behaviors beneficial to society.

In the past, the nature of this relationship was a bit cloudy. However, this concept is today pretty well defined. PR’s targeting of influential audiences such as stakeholders, investors, and business partners is now made easier with the availability of SM platforms. Both strategies are now able to work seamlessly to build trust and loyalty.

The impact of SM on PR cannot be underestimated. Firstly, SM with its real-time messaging helps PR get stronger by spreading press releases and other PR communications faster and further. The partnership heralds a new age of marketing what we now know as relationship marketing – giving it a friendly face and making communications warmer and more engaging. Most significant of all, PR has been able, through SM, to reach wider audiences a lot faster than ever imagined before.

This has been made possible thanks to a group known as influencers who add that key ingredient of credibility. This group plays a critical role for PR companies in social marketing because they act as a conduit between the audiences and the brands of their liking.

Benefits galore

This partnership offers a multitude of benefits, particularly in today’s digital age where the lines between traditional marketing and social engagement are increasingly blurred. For instance, using SM platforms, public relations can address critical issues and convert negative impacts on their brands rapidly.

SM has been hugely instrumental in helping PR to navigate the conversation surrounding a crisis. Because of the many SM platforms PR professionals are now able to monitor the situation and respond accordingly. Companies can also monitor comments and consequently make informed decisions.  Social media can in many cases be used to identify a crisis very early and alert the PR team who in turn can take remedial action quickly.

This partnership also provides a comprehensive approach to brand promotion and engagement through effectively leveraging the strengths of both disciplines to achieve maximum impact. By focusing on expanding reach, enhancing credibility, driving growth, and utilizing data analytics, organizations can seamlessly navigate the digital landscape and achieve their communication and marketing goals.

By sharing stories on social media, PR can manage reputations by controlling the narrative; thereby changing public perceptions. The two can work together within the SM strategy to manage a brand’s image positively.

To wrap it up…

Today, PR firms have the luxury of a plethora of SM platforms that can be incorporated into their overall communications strategy. Platforms like X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram can be integrated to form an effective PR Plan covering several target groups and demographics.

In social media, PR firms have also found a partner that allows them to add that much-needed punch to their SM strategy. More PR firms are today leveraging SM platforms to enhance their social marketing efforts with more accurate targeting and a wider reach to create heightened awareness and eventually drive desired results.
